Jenny stumbled upon the Alamo Plaza Motor Hotel while driving down Old Spanish Trail in Houston and was fascinated by the history at the property. Alamo Plaza was actually the very first motel chain in the United States, capitalizing on the new automobile culture that was emerging during the first half of the 20th century. The original Alamo opened in Waco, TX in the late 1930s. Houston's Alamo was built in 1948 with the same distinctive facade. The pool out front has been filled in, and the units are now used as low-income housing rather than motel rooms, but the look of the place remains otherwise relatively unchanged.

The Alamo Plaza inspired a journey to explore other vintage motor hotels in the Houston area, celebrating this fading record of a period in our country's history.
